Mario Raniolo paints with matter even before he paints with colour. Bologna gesso and ceramic powder, pigments obtained from stones gathered in Sicily, earths from Morocco and the Jordan Valley, resins that stop water halfway through its movement: every painting is born of what the artist has gathered, ground and left to react on the canvas.
This first volume of the catalogue raisonné brings together 262 works made between 2020 and 2026, arranged in two sections. Matter gathers the 111 works in which relief, encrustation and crust become a language. Abstract the 151 in which painting returns to purity, gesture and field of colour. The same themes run through both: the sea and the blue, physics and the cosmos, nature alive and nature wounded, the Sicily of his origins, the forests of Bavaria, the inner life.
Each work is reproduced at the same size and accompanied by title, year, technique, dimensions, collection and bibliography, with references to the chapters of the autobiography The Colour of Matter. A reasoned repertoire, not a mere collection: the instrument for reading a journey that continues.
